How to Remove Unwanted Browser Add-on, Extension and Plugin from IE/Firefox/Chrome?

 

Suffering from various pop-up ads when shopping online? The homepage and new tab have been hijacked to other unfamiliar website? A strange toolbar shows up in your web browser? All those are caused by adware and potentially unwanted program and fulfilled through the add-on, extension or plugin install on your web browser.

In most cases, adware adds add-on, extension or plugin to your web browser in order to display in-text, pop-up and video ads in the webpage you are visiting; browser hijackers install web extension to take control of your browser in order to modify the search engine and redirect web searches to whatever search engine owned by the partner.

To solve those problems you have to uninstall the main program from your computer and remove related browser add-on, extension and plugin at the same time.

Step 1 > Uninstall the main program

 

Those adware, browser hijackers or toolbar usually sneak into your computer along with other free downloads, so you should uninstall unknown or unwanted programs installed recently. We will take the removal of Coupon Locker as an example.

 

For Windows 8 Users:

Right-click the screen’s bottom-left corner Control Panel Uninstall a program

Uninstall Coupon Locker adware and other unknown or unexpected programs.

 

For Windows 7/Vista Users:

Go to Start button > Control Panel > Uninstall a program / Programs and Features

Go to Start button > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

Step 2 > Remove malicious browser add-on, extension and plugin

 

For Internet Explorer Users:

In most cases, the browse add-on, extension or plugin in Internet Explorer will be removed along with the uninstallation of the main program. You can go through this step to check if it is still there.

To remove extension: click on the gear icon or Tools → select Manage Add-ons → go to Toolbars and Extensions tab → right click on Coupon Locker and any other suspicious extensions → choose Disable in the drop-down menu → close the window and click on OK button

For Mozilla Firefox Users:

To remove extensions and plugins: click on the orange Firefox button firefox-button.jpg (111×28) on the upper left corner of the browser → hit Add-ons → go to Extensions tab → Remove suspicious extensions (Coupon Locker)

Switch to Plugins tab → Disable suspicious plugins

 

For Google Chrome Users:

To remove extension: Click on Customize icon (Wrench or 3 bar icon) > Tools > Extensions → locate Coupon Locker and any unwanted or unknown extension → click the Recycling Bin to remove it

When remove the extensions on Chrome, you may be informed that the extension is managed and cannot be removed or disabled.

1. Click on Customize icon (Wrench or 3 bar icon) > Tools > Extensions

Or, type chrome://extensions in the address bar and hit enter

Check the Developer mode option and copy the ID value of the extension.

2. Remove its registry entries:

Open the Registry Editor, find and delete the registry key which has the same value located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Policies > Chrome > ExtensionInstallForcelist.

To open Registry Editor: Press Windows Key + R → type regedit → hit Enter

 

3. Remove related files:

Go to hard disk C and put the ID value in the search field then search. In the search results, delete all the files and folders located at C:\Users\ user name\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions

Now this managed extension should have been removed completely.

2. Remove unwanted add-on, extension and plugins

Click on the up arrow on the Home tab of Cloud System Booster to go to Slim Toolbar, then remove all the suspicious extensions and plugins.
